Europe’s Copernicus climate service said the global average sea-surface temperature reached 21.1°C on 22 August 2026, edging past the previous daily mark from March 2024. That timing is the alarm: ocean heat usually peaks around the southern summer’s end in March–April, not in August.

Scientists describe two stacked causes. Human-driven warming has been raising the baseline for decades. A strengthening El Niño is now adding extra heat in the tropical Pacific. Samantha Burgess of Copernicus put it plainly: El Niño is adding heat on top of a climate that is already hotter.

Warm water is not a trivia number. It feeds stronger storms, lifts sea levels, bleaches reefs, and cuts the ocean’s ability to swallow carbon dioxide. Marine heatwaves are already sitting on large patches of the map, including the Mediterranean and polar seas.

Some researchers say today’s surface temperatures may be the warmest in thousands of years. That claim is about paleoclimate context, not a single thermometer. The operational fact is simpler: the daily record fell in the wrong month, and Copernicus expects more warmth as El Niño matures.
