Chocolate’s American story used to stop, in many textbooks, at Mesoamerica and then jump to Europeans. That was always too small. Chemical traces had already put cacao at Chaco Canyon in the Southwest. What was missing was the other great precolonial urban world east of the Mississippi.
In August 2026, a PLOS One paper led by archaeologist Adam King reported Theobroma cacao DNA in two pottery sherds from Etowah, a Mississippian city in present-day Georgia. The pots are 11th–12th century. Etowah’s famous peak is later, in the 1300s. The cacao sits in the city’s founding feasts, not its tourist-era skyline.
What was actually in the sherds
The vessels are Etowah Complicated Stamped jars — local type, local clay, curvilinear stamps. They came from a borrow pit between Mounds A and B, dug for earthen fill and then packed with bone, broken pots, and feast debris while people raised the site’s first platform mound. The sherds were excavated in the 1950s, stored, moved, and, decades later, scraped for residue.
Earlier chemistry had hinted at cacao-like compounds, which can overlap with other plants (including yaupon holly, used for a caffeinated drink in the Southeast). Ancient DNA is the harder claim. Two samples carried highly fragmented cacao sequences. That is not a recipe card. It is a presence test: somebody put cacao, or a cacao drink, in those jars.
Cacao does not grow in Georgia. The tree wants humid tropics. So the beans — or a processed product — moved.
Why feasting is the point
Etowah covers about 54 acres along the Etowah River: mounds, plaza, village. Building a platform mound is public labour. Filling the hole you dug with the wreckage of a feast is how a community performs a new centre. Putting a tropical drink in that performance is not a snack. It is a signal: we can obtain what the climate here cannot grow.
That does not mean Maya governors in Bartow County. It means Mississippian people were already inside a continental web that also touched the Southwest and, somewhere upstream, the cacao belt. The route is still unmapped. Gulf coast? Overland through the southern plains? Down-the-line gifts? The DNA does not say.

Chaco’s cacao already forced historians to stretch the chocolate map north. Etowah stretches it east. Together they make precolonial North America look less like isolated “cultures” and more like a set of routes that could move a fragile tropical seed a very long way.
There are caveats, and they belong in the same paragraph as the headline. Museum sherds have been handled for seventy years. Fragmented DNA is not a whole genome of a named cacao variety. Sample size is two positives. The honest version is still large: cacao was present in Mississippian feast pottery centuries before Europeans, in a city that would later be one of the region’s major centres.
If you remember one thing, remember the mismatch: a tropical tree, a Georgia mound, a feast that helped invent a city. Trade is not a European invention. Chocolate’s American map was always bigger than the classroom version.
